Barracuda Bay by Carmen Amato

It would be true to admit that I’m a big fan of this writer and this series in particular. I reviewed the first book in the series CLIFF DIVER, a few months back. You can read the review here.
Amato’s first career was as a CIA analyst based in Mexico, and her knowledge of cartels and corruption, as well as ordinary people and their communities informs and colours her stories.
The main protagonist is Emilia Cruz, the only female detective in Acapulco, and she has to put up with incredible amouts of sexist cr&p from everyone in the department. It’s the attention to detail that I find fascinating, and the way the characters grow and develop, the plots twisting and turning but always imbued in realism.
There’s also a visit to Washington DC, another of the author’s postings. Fascinating to see Cruz out of her comfort zone in an unfamiliar city and country.
BARRACUDA BAY really threw me off course with unexpected outcomes, all within the internal logic of the world the author has so skilfully created.
Treat yourself to a binge read soon – you won’t regret it.
